NewARC’s Adopt-a-Studio Campaign

Assemblage, which was established in 2010, is a non-profit organisation aimed at assisting new and emerging artists to network and develop the skills necessary to succeed in the visual arts industry. Assemblage operates from premises in Newtown (NewARC), which was opened in April 2012, from which it hosts workshops and peer mentoring sessions. In addition, Assemblage rents out studios to emerging artists.

Our mission is to be the central hub for the visual arts community of Johannesburg to connect, to network, to share ideas, information and advice and to collaborate. We encourage production, participation, professionalism and the sharing of resources, knowledge and skills. We seek to contribute and promote artistic innovation, collaboration and a proactive vibrancy within Johannesburg.

The vision for Assemblage is to have a positive and long-term impact on the Johannesburg visual arts community by enabling artists to be their best and to have sustainable careers as artists.

Our activities range from an informative website, peer mentoring groups, workshops, group exhibitions, artist studios and other collaborative projects. Based on data gathered through Assemblage’s records, through its various activities, Assemblage has the potential to directly impact on the working process of over 1000 artists per year.

About Adopt-a-Studio

In order to be able to provide this support to these artists, we are quite reliant on funding, donations and any support in kind. So far we have proven to be very resourceful and have grown this organisation purely on a volunteer basis, with occasional funding to run workshops and one-off projects.

As a non-profit organisation we are exploring new and entrepreneurial ways of keeping our organisation going. For example, we have raised money through online, incentive-based crowd funding and in the near future will be opening a printmaking studio where we will generate income from selling editioned prints.

The Adopt-a-Studio campaign is another one of these initiatives. We are asking you to invest in the Visual Arts of South Africa.

How can you get involved?

You can contribute to the campaign either in monthly instalments over a 12 month period or upfront. BUT this isn’t just charity – in return for your contribution you get artwork from one of the studio artists to add to or to begin your art collection. You are investing not only in physical artworks, but in emerging artists and their careers too.

  • For R1,000 per month or R12,000 once off, you get an editioned or small original artwork.
  • For R2,000 per month or R24,000 once off, you get an original artwork.
  • For R3,000 per month or R36,000 once off, you get an original artwork AND naming rights for a studio where it says “This studio is supported by YOUR NAME”.

Alternatively we are open to suggestions of amounts and suggestions of what you may want from us in return. If you choose to support this campaign over a 12 month period, we would love for you to be actively involved with the activities at the NewARC. You will be invited to exclusive events, exhibition previews and will receive regular updates and photos about the artists, the work they are producing and the exhibitions they are participating in. We want you to become a part of our community.

The money raised for this campaign will go towards subsidising the studio rental for artists so that they can continue making art and being art entrepreneurs – without the pressures of very high rent to pay.

We launched this campaign at an exclusive cocktail evening on 19th March and are sorry that you couldn’t make it. We will definitely be holding similar events in the future and hope that you will join us.

Enclosed is a pledge card as well as a gift – a collaborative print made by the studio artists already resident in the NewARC.

We thank you for your time!

The Assemblage Team
